This not only refers to his family, which lost in the first film, also some others who do not know. Note that this is a direct sequel to Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome , so all we see spend some time after the film. Moreover, Miller himself took care to explain that the franchise is revived and that this is the same Max played by Gibson.
